2026-27 Tryouts Process

Thank you for considering Starlights Synchronized Skating teams!  We look forward to seeing you at tryouts in the Spring.

If you are new to Starlights and looking to have a private conversation with our director to ask questions, please contact Jenny.Cherry@starlights.us  We understand it is sensitive to leave one club and join another and are happy to work with you privately.

Starlights typically hold tryouts for most teams in March, with Aspire teams in April.  Our Adult teams (Adult, Masters and Open Masters) also hold tryouts in April.

Starlights Tryouts Process

Step 1 : Register for tryouts.  Info for registration will be posted in late February-early March via our website and social media platforms.  Follow us on socials to stay up to date!

The cost for tryout registration for 25-26 was $55. If you registered prior to March 9th, you qualify for an early bird fee of $35.

  • The registration link will allow you to enter which team level(s) for which you would like to be considered. Note that Starlights will verify test and age level to determine if you are eligible for a particular level.  If your skater is planning to test prior to tryouts and hoping to try out for a higher-level team, this can be noted in the comments section of the registration.
  • Returning Starlights should register for their current team and one level above their current team (if the skater meets the skating skills level requirement) unless the skater has aged off of the current level.  In that case, the registration will not give the current team level as an option during the registration process.
  • Those skaters trying out for Aspire will be given two options: travel and non-travel. Non-travel Aspire teams are level 1 and 2. Travel Aspire teams are level 3 and 4. If you register for travel teams, please note that these teams do require out of state travel and hotel stays.  Only check off travel if your family is willing to travel.  Starlights will not always field all four Aspire levels.  The number of Aspire teams is based on the number of skaters who come to tryouts.

Step 2: Download, review, and practice skills

Download the appropriate tryout skills sheet which corresponds to your skater’s tryout level (a link be included in your registration confirmation).

Practice the skills on your own and with your private coach(es).

Step 3: Tryout day

  • Please arrive 30 minutes before your on-ice scheduled time.
  • Aspire tryouts take place at GLACIER ICE ARENA in Vernon Hills, IL
  • Preliminary and above tryouts take place at TWIN RINKS in Buffalo Grove, IL
  • Skaters at Preliminary and above should wear a skating dress to tryouts.  Hair should be in a bun.
  • Skaters trying out for Aspire should wear athletic clothing. Jeans and other street clothes are not allowed at tryouts.  Hair should be pulled back in a ponytail or bun.  Current Starlights should be wearing black leggings and their Starlights jacket.
  • Tryouts are closed to the public; this includes Aspire.
  • Parent information sessions will take place during tryouts.
  • All questions on tryout day should be addressed to our board member volunteers at the check in table.  Our coaches will be unable to have conversations on tryout day.

Step 4: Receive placements

Please note, decision timelines will be at the discretion of Starlights. We are unable to release early results for any reason.  Email info@starlights.us with any questions.

Step 5: Commit to team placement

Once you receive your placement email, you will have a limited amount of time to accept your team placement before it can be offered to someone else.

We look forward to meeting you! Please reach out to info@starlights.us with any other questions.
